Everything you need to know before your first eSIM
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your device. Unlike a physical SIM card, it can be programmed remotely. You simply scan a QR code from ValaeSIM to add a new data plan — no plastic card required, no waiting for shipping.
Yes, your device must be carrier-unlocked to use a third-party eSIM. Most phones purchased outright (not on contract) are unlocked. If you bought your phone directly from a network carrier, contact them to unlock it — this is usually free after your contract ends.
Absolutely. Most modern devices support Dual SIM (physical SIM + eSIM). You can keep your home SIM for calls and SMS while using ValaeSIM for data abroad. Simply set ValaeSIM as your default data line in Settings.
Installation takes under 2 minutes. Open your phone Settings → Mobile/Cellular → Add eSIM → Scan QR Code. Follow the on-screen prompts and you're done. You can install the eSIM before your trip and it activates when you arrive.
You can purchase a new eSIM plan anytime from our website. The new plan is delivered to your email immediately. Some destinations also support top-ups — check your destination page for details.
Yes! We offer regional plans that cover entire regions (e.g. Europe, Southeast Asia). Alternatively, our Global plans cover 190+ countries under a single data allowance, perfect for multi-country itineraries.
Your data connection stops, but the eSIM profile remains on your device. You can purchase a new plan and the eSIM reactivates instantly. You do not need to reinstall the eSIM — just buy another plan.
Yes. ValaeSIM uses the same encrypted cellular networks as regular SIM cards. Your traffic is as secure as any 4G/5G mobile connection. For extra privacy on public Wi-Fi we still recommend using a VPN, but your ValaeSIM data connection itself is encrypted by the network.
